SriLankan Airlines to Undergo Restructuring Instead of Sale

Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva confirmed that SriLankan Airlines will undergo restructuring rather than being sold.

He underscored that current regulations permit the transfer of only up to 49% of the airline’s shares to another entity, yet no viable investor has shown interest thus far.

Minister Siripala de Silva further explained that the government’s strategy involves restructuring the airline instead of selling it outright.

He mentioned that Sri Lankan law restricts the transfer of more than 49% of SriLankan Airlines’ shares to another entity. Despite minimal global interest, only six individuals have expressed interest, none of whom met the suitability criteria. Even if extended to a Sri Lankan entrepreneur, their qualifications would require validation.
