A man and his wife, who were arrested early this morning at Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport while attempting to flee the country, have been remanded until November 22nd.
The suspects, 52-year-old Dhammika Kumara Ranasinghe and 42-year-old Samudra Surangi Premachandra, appeared before Colombo Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage today.
The couple had been in hiding in Malaysia for several years after defrauding over 1.8 billion rupees through a pyramid scheme. According to the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) of the CID, their scheme involved a financial institution operating in Kurunegala, which was designed to trick a large number of people.
Investigators have confirmed that statements from 68 victims corroborate the claims, revealing that the couple deceived numerous depositors. Authorities continue their investigation as the couple faces serious charges of financial fraud.
