Indian National Sentenced for Involvement in Match-Fixing

The Kandy High Court has handed down a suspended prison sentence to an Indian national who admitted guilt in a match-fixing case. The charges arose from incidents during the Legend Cricket Trophy 2024, held at Pallekele Cricket Stadium from March 8 to 19, 2024.

The investigation began after the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-corruption unit alerted the Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Offenses Related to Sports. It was discovered that two players from the Punjab Royal team—one English and one New Zealand—had been approached to fix matches.

Following the investigation, the Attorney General’s Department filed an indictment against the Indian national for match-fixing and attempting to influence matches. The accused pleaded guilty during court proceedings.

The judge imposed a fine of 5.5 million rupees per charge and sentenced the individual to a suspended prison term of 10 years, with hard labor for two years for each charge.
