Local cannabis valued at Rs. 20 million seized in Tissamaharama

In a coordinated nighttime operation on June 20, 2024, involving the Navy, Coast Guard, and Police in Kirinda, Tissamaharama, two suspects were apprehended while preparing over 104 kg of local cannabis for transportation. Additionally, a cab was seized during the operation.

Regular search operations by the Navy and Coast Guard aim to combat various illegal activities, including drug trafficking.

The joint operation was carried out by SLNS Kawantissa from the Southern Naval Command, along with the Coast Guard and Kirinda Police in the Kirinda area. The raiding team discovered 104.815 kg of local cannabis packaged in six polythene parcels being loaded into a cab. Two suspects, aged 23 and 28 and residents of Tissamaharama, were arrested in connection with the incident. The estimated street value of the seized cannabis is believed to exceed Rs. 20 million.

The suspects, along with the seized cannabis and the cab, were handed over to the Kirinda Police for further legal proceedings.
