Crispy Air Fryer Onion Rings

Posted on

I love the crispy air fryer onion rings when dipped in buttermilk egg wash and Panko. The onions inside are sweet and caramelized and easy to bite off. Don’t pull on the soggy onion anymore. These onion rings, which are air-fried, are the perfect crunchy snack. Before air-frying, tossing them in flour is the key to making them nice and crispy. This dish is very simple to create and takes about 15 minutes. Serve them with your favorite dipping sauce, like homemade chipotle mayo, and enjoy!

Can you create onion rings in an air fryer?

Yes, but you’ll need to make some changes as we do in this recipe. For example, we don’t just cover people with a wet batter like you usually do with beer-battered onion rings. Instead, we roll it twice in panko and crumbs to make a thicker crust.

The hot air moving around the basket will make the delicate, wet batter splatter. Rolling it twice in crumbs, on the other hand, makes the coating stronger and ensures the bands get crunchy in the middle.

What kind of onions are the best to use?

Vidalia, Maui, Texas, or Walla Walla onions, which are sweet, are the best choice here. They tend to be flatter and have a sweeter taste than other onions. Even red or yellow onions could be used.

How long do onion rings need to cook in an air fryer?

This depends on how thick the appliance is and what kind it is. At 350 degrees F, it should take about 12 to 15 minutes to cook rings about 1/2 inch thick. When they are done, they should be nice and crispy and look golden brown.

Can you use batter with an air fryer?

We don’t advise you to do it. It would support if you had a strong coating to keep the hot air from blowing all over the basket. Also, the food won’t get that crisp outside because there isn’t any hot oil, making batter-fried food so good.

Can you use an air fryer for cooking frozen onion rings?

Sure! Just add a few minutes to the time it takes to cook. Spray the frozen portions with a little oil, and air-fry them at 350F for 14–16 minutes, or until they are crunchy and golden.

How do I store leftovers?

First, let them cool. If you don’t, the heat will steam inside the container, making the food soggy. Please maintain them in the refrigerator and eat them within a day or two. Air-fry at 400F until hot to reheat.

Can leftover onion rings be frozen?

Yes. But we don’t think it’s a good idea because it won’t be as crispy and tasty as when it’s just been air-fried. Instead, we suggest you flash-freeze the raw slices that have been coated and keep them for up to a month. Then you can air-fry the servings you want to eat.

Cooking tips:

  • Don’t have buttermilk? Here is a simple way to make buttermilk home instead of buying it.
  • Also, cut the onions into creamy rings, so the vegetables and the crunchy coating go well together.
  • Ensure the pan is already hot so the rings will start to cook when you close the basket. This keeps them from becoming wet.
  • I strongly suggest using panko crumbs instead of regular breadcrumbs for a crispier texture.
  • Also, remember to put them in the basket in a single layer.
  • Different brands may have different cooking times. So, the finest time to control them is after 12 minutes. If you need more time, continue to cook for a few more minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium sweet onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened bread crumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon of Ranch seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/8 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • 2 big eggs
  • 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 cups Panko crumbs of bread
  • 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese, shredded
  • 2 tbsp of vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Scrape the onions and slice them 12″ thick. Be careful not to break the slices as you separate them.
  • Mix the flour, bread crumbs, salt, family farm, paprika, and cayenne pepper in a medium bowl.
  • In another medium vessel, beat the egg with the buttermilk with a whisk.
  • Mix breadcrumbs, oil, and parmesan together in a third medium bowl.
  • Each onion ring should be dipped first in the egg mixture and then in the flour mixture. Dip it home into the egg mixture and press it into the panko bread crumbs.
  • Please put them in one layer on a baking sheet. Cooking spray should be used on each.
  • Set the air fryer’s temperature to 350 degrees F.
  • Put the onion rings in a single coat in the air fryer and cook for 12 to 15 minutes until the outside is golden and crispy.
  • Take the onion rings out of the air fryer and do the same thing with the remainder of the rings.

How do I serve them?

Use different sauces with these perfect, crunchy starters. Dip them in Big Mac Sauce, Honey Mustard, Ketchup, Chipotle Sauce, tzatziki, Yum Yum Sauce, or refreshing tzatziki.

You can use these sauces to dip them in:

  • Homemade barbecue sauce
  • Buffalo sauce recipe
  • How to make a sweet and sour sauce
  • Sauce from Chick-fil-A copycat

As a side, they go great with fried chicken, nuggets that taste like Chick-fil-A, and Beer Battered Fish. Lastly, these onion rings are great on tacos, burgers, salads, burrito bowls, hotdog sandwiches, and more!
